Prolonged Exposure (PE)
Prolonged Exposure (PE) is one of three psychotherapies recommended by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs for the treatment of traumatized veterans. The other two psychotherapies recommended by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the treatment of PTSD are Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). All three of these therapies involve identifying unhelpful thoughts that keep the symptoms going, and either weakening or replacing those thoughts.

Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP)
Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) adds the component of Response Prevention to the component of Exposure. ERP has been effective in helping many people break free from obsessive thoughts and compulsive behaviors.
